English Department
Dr. Lorretta M. Holloway has been invited by the chair of the Worcester School Committee to serve as a member of the search committee for the next school superintendent. Holloway contributes to K to 12 education in a number of ways. She is co-chair of Worcester’s Citywide Parent Planning Advisory Council; teaches a professional development course through DGCE for teachers of gifted and advanced learners; and is also working on a regional college readiness initiative sponsored by the BHE and the DOE.

Modern Languages Department
Dr. Emilce Cordeiro was elected to serve as a member of the Board of Directors of The Massachusetts Foreign Language Association (MaFLA) until 2011. She is working in two committees during 2008: New Teachers Initiative and Professional Development.

*Attended the workshop, “Designing and Grading Writing Assignments,” given by Dr. Linda Nilson of Clemson University in Worcester, February 29, 2008.

*Gave a paper entitled “La representación de la violencia en la película Garage Olimpo (2002)” (The artistic representation of the violence in the film Garage Olimpo (2002) at the VII International Conference of Hispanic Literature, Cusco-Perú, March 3-6, 2008.

Dr. Michele C. Davila chaired the session “Reescribiendo la historia: cartas, detectives y revolución” at the International Literature Symposium in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and presented the paper “En busca del Corazón de Voltaire: el detective epistolar de Luis López Nieves,” in 2007.

*Published the article “Identidad personal e identidad nacional en Vuelo de Cisne de Rosario Ferré” in Enhebrando palabras al hilo de la escritura.

*Participated as a faculty consultant at the College Board’s Advanced Placement Program at Trinity College, San Antonio, Texas.

Sociology Department
Dr. Henry Tischler gave a presentation at a session on “Elites and Exclusion” February 23 at the Eastern Sociological Society Annual Meeting. His paper was entitled “Barred from the Club: Social Exclusion among the Wealthy.”
