A Fulbright Fellowship Takes Dr. Paul Bruno to Greece and Bulgaria

“The Oracle at Delphi enjoins all visitors: ‘Know Thyself,’ ” says Assistant Professor of Philosophy Paul Bruno. “I feel like my fellowship took me a step closer to that goal.”

As the recipient of a prestigious Fulbright Hays Fellowship, Bruno spent four weeks this summer in Greece and Bulgaria. He took part in a seminar organized by the U.S. Department of Education that explored the cultural legacies of these two Balkan countries and also their place in the contemporary world as members of the European Union and NATO.

With his fellow participants he visited many museums and historical sites, as well as meeting with educators, government officials and public figures throughout the region.

It was a life-changing experience. “For years I have been reading ancient Greek philosophy,” says Bruno, “and the opportunity to hike on Mount Olympus, to consult the Oracle at Delphi, and to walk down to the Piraeus (the port just outside of Athens and the setting of Plato’s Republic) will stay with me forever.”

My wife and I had a chance to visit Bulgaria twice in 05 and 06 and Greece in 05. What a great experience. Our daughter was teaching at the American College of Sofia. On our second visit she and her husband were living in an apartment in a Sofia neighborhood rather than on campus. That was a great way for us to be among the people. Wonderful!
