“The Dr. Kenneth J. Preskenis Scholarship not only perpetuates the memory of an outstanding colleague but also serves the interests of the college by providing opportunities for deserving students from Boston,” says Dr. Thomas Koshy, Mathemetics Department, chair of the Preskenis Scholarship Committee.

The Preskenis Scholarship, awarded annually, enables talented students from South Boston to attend the college. It honors the late Dr. Kenneth J. Preskenis, a beloved professor of mathematics, who passed away suddenly in 2002. He was devoted both to FSC students and to the young people of South Boston, where he was a lifelong resident.

In June, family and friends of Preskenis organized a benefit event for the scholarship at the Suffolk Downs racetrack. “Kenny loved math in a way that other people love chocolate or wine — it was just a huge treat for him,” says Sacha Pfeiffer, Preskenis’s niece, who lives in the Boston area. “So this scholarship fund is the perfect tribute to him, and the great turn-out at the fundraiser was a reminder of how many people’s lives he influenced.”

Above, P. J. Preskenis ’82, a nephew of Preskenis who majored in economics at FSC, presents a check for $7,000 for the scholarship fund to President Flanagan. Koshy, left, and Mathematics Department Chair Dr. Walter Czarnec, right, were longtime colleagues of Preskenis.
