The popular children’s book author and illustrator Steven Kellogg was the featured artist at the 2007 FSC Children’s Literature Festival November 1. He is the author of over ninety books, including his own versions of the stories of Johnny Appleseed and Paul Bunyan and A-Hunting We will Go, one of his latest publications. All are illustrated in his distinctive whimsical style. During the week of the workshop there was an exhibition of Kellogg’s art work in the Mazmanian Gallery.

The event was attended by educators from around the region, including many FSC alumni, and students. Kellogg signed copies of his books, talked with participants at a reception, and gave an after-dinner address. Pat Keogh, a former FSC children’s literature instructor, gave a workshop for educators in the afternoon.

Dr. Evelyn Perry of the English Department organized Kellogg’s visit and the college advancement office coordinated the event, which was supported by Arts & Humanities, academic affairs  and the president’s office.

Monday evening, October 29, a capacity audience in the Forum was thrilled by one of Arts & Humanities’ highlights of the year, a vigorous and exciting performance by Inca Son, a music and dance troupe from Peru. “Get ready for a music and dance extravaganza,” said Mark Evans, Arts & Humanities director, in his introduction, and he was right.

Inca Son’s mission is to bring the rich culture of the Andes and other regions of South America to new audiences around the world. Cesar Villalobos, founder and creative director, together with other musicians sang and played Andean instruments. Other members of the group performed traditional dances. All wore colorful regional costumes.

Inca Son is the winner of the 2007 Independent Music Award and the Boston Music Award. They have performed in many national venues, including the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, and the Epcot Center, Disney World, and with the Boston Pops.
