Passive voice

In the passive voice the subject receives the action described by the verb. It is indirect but appropriate when readers are more interested in the receiver or result of the action. Passive voice is used more frequently in the sciences than in the humanities and the social sciences.

Examples:

Many accidents are caused by drunk drivers in the U.S.A.

  • Are caused, which is the passive verb, describes the action that happens to the subject accidents.

Africa was visited by many FSC students last summer.

  • Africa, the subject of the sentence, receives the action was visited. The agents, many FSC students, appears in a preposition phrase.

This apartment has been occupied by Eric for three years.

  • The passive voice in this sentence emphasizes the apartment, which is the subject of the sentence, rather than the occupant, Eric.

Passive Voice in Different Verb Tenses

To form the passive voice in different verb tenses, follow this formula: object + helping verb (as appropriate for the verb tense) + be/been/being (as appropriate for the verb tense) + past participle + (by) + (subject).

Exception: In the passive voice, you can omit by and the subject when they are unnecessary in the sentence.

Examples:

Simple Present
Equality for all is guaranteed by the Constitution.

Present Progressive
Steps are being taken by many politicians to enforce the Constitution.

Present Perfect

Simple Past
