Framingham State College’s Polices on Plagiarism
According to the Framingham State College Undergraduate Catalog, 2006-2007, plagiarism is determined by the college’s Policy on Academic Honesty. The catalog states that plagiarism is “claming as one’s own work the published or unpublished literal or paraphrased work of another. It should be recognized that plagiarism is not only academically dishonest but also illegal.” Other infractions of the Policy on Academic Honesty include cheating on exams, tests, quizzes, assignments, and papers; unauthorized collaboration with others while preparing course assignments; submitting the same assignment for credit in more than one course; dishonest procedures in field work, computer, laboratory and studio work; misuses of college facilities such as accessing another’s personal information without consent; and falsification of academic record or forms.
Procedures regarding alleged infractions of the Academic Honesty policy:
- For the first alleged infraction, the student will be confronted by the faculty member about it. The appropriate penalties for a first infraction range from re-submission of the work in question to failing the course.
- For the second alleged infraction, the student will also be confronted by the faculty member. Penalties for a second instance of academic dishonesty range from failing the work in question to failing the course.
- A third alleged infraction will result in the faculty member forwarding all evidence of the documented infraction to the Dean of Students. The Dean will convene a hearing, and if the student is found guilty, the penalty is dismissal from the college.
Some other procedural points:
- If the student and faculty member cannot agree if there was an actual infraction of the academic honesty policy, either may request a hearing.
- At this hearing the Dean of Students and two faculty members—one from a department other than that of the department of the involved faculty member—will be the hearing body. If the student is found guilty, the original proposed consequence will be applied.
- If the faculty member feels that the alleged infraction is severe enough to warrant a dismissal from the college prior to the third offense, the faculty member must request a hearing. The hearing is conducted by the Dean of Students. If the student is found guilty of the infraction, the Dean will decide if the infraction deserves dismissal or a lesser penalty.
- All students in all cases have the right to appeal the decision of the hearing body. Appeals of the first and second infraction go to the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
- Appeals for third infraction must be made to the President of the College.
- Documentation of an alleged infraction that requires review by the Dean of Students must be submitted within one week of the infraction.
